Advocacy & Networking

Driving Change for a Better Chocolate Industry

Why is advocacy needed?

The cocoa sector faces major challenges: millions of farmers live in poverty, exploitative child labour is widespread, and environmental issues such as deforestation and climate change threaten the livelihoods of entire communities. Despite decades of efforts, little has changed—most cocoa-farming families still do not earn a living income, while billions are generated at the other end of the supply chain.
These imbalances are not accidental, but the result of a global system in which responsibility for fair conditions is often shifted away. Switzerland plays a central role in this: it is here that market power, expertise, and influence in the chocolate industry are concentrated. This is precisely why we see it as our task to advocate—both politically and within society—for real change:

- for living incomes,
- for an end to child labour,
- for the protection of forests and biodiversity,
- and for fair market conditions that respect human rights and environmental standards throughout the entire value chain.

We call on companies, policymakers, and consumers in Switzerland to take responsibility and work together with cocoa-producing countries to create just and sustainable solutions. Only through binding rules, transparency, and genuine partnerships can we effectively address the root causes of poverty, child labour, and environmental destruction, and shape a chocolate industry that benefits everyone.

Why is networking essential?

Addressing the major challenges in the cocoa sector—such as poverty, child labour, and environmental issues—requires collaboration and exchange among all stakeholders. Only when cocoa farmers, companies, policymakers, scientists, and civil society openly share their perspectives, learn from each other, and develop solutions together can we achieve lasting change. Networking enables transparency about both successes and failures, and ensures that everyone is included—because only together, and with genuine commitment, can we create a fairer future for chocolate.

As an independent voice for conscious consumers, citizens, and cocoa farmer organizations, the Good Chocolate Hub advocates for eliminating inequalities and injustices along the supply chain. We do this through coordinated action and cooperation with local, national, and international organizations, sustainable chocolate producers, activists, and dedicated networks. At the same time, the Good Chocolate Hub serves as a central platform for networking, fostering exchange and collaboration. For example, we organize the annual Schoggifestival ehrundredlich, where networking plays an increasingly central role.
