The Good Chocolate Hub is an independent association that is politically engaged, yet unaffiliated with any political party. For years, we have addressed the persistent human rights abuses and environmental issues within Swiss chocolate value chains. As chocolate enthusiasts, we are economically, socially, and politically connected, and we firmly believe that chocolate can be produced and consumed responsibly. We explore innovative ways to promote sustainable consumption while maintaining a strong focus on the political agenda. For us, the chocolate and cocoa system serves as a model for food production as a whole, highlighting the intricate relationships within food systems.
From journalists and geographers to tourism experts and educators, we are passionate about making chocolate not just good for the palate, but also for the planet.
As advocates for a fairer and environmentally friendly chocolate industry, we actively promote policy changes to ensure that the sweetest things in life are produced sustainably, honestly, and more fairly. The future of chocolate is in our (and your) hands!
Cocoa, human rights and advocacy, this is where Andrea feels at home in terms of content. Fieldwork in Mexico, journalism in the Swiss media, and many years of working on human rights in the cocoa value chain at Public Eye made her realize how important it is to know the people and their needs in food production chains. She is therefore excited to use the Good Chocolate Hub to turn the conventional chocolate world on its head with new, more sustainable approaches. Andrea is the Co-Founder of the Good Chocolate Hub together with Anja and Monica.
Anja can draw on a wealth of experience thanks to an early start in journalism and many years working in marketing. She studied sociology and cultural studies and decided early on that her work should have a positive impact. With her company, the agency Nunyola GmbH, she exclusively looks after clients whose social and ecological responsibility she can stand behind. Through her father Yayra Glover’s project, she was able to gain an insight into the world of chocolate and cocoa. Her goal is for people to think of alternatives when buying chocolate that will sustainably improve the lives of cocoa producers. Anja is the Co-Founder of the Good Chocolate Hub together with Andrea and Monica.
A few years ago, the illustrator and graphic designer became aware of the problems in the cocoa business. Since then, she has supported sustainable production and meaningful projects in the cocoa sector and is fascinated by how cocoa has accompanied people for so many years and what delicious products can be made from fine flavored cocoa. With her work for the Schoggifestival, she would like to express her gratitude to the wonderful natural world and to those producers who are working for a better chocolate world.
Evelyn, a human geographer focused on development and globalization, supported Bali’s Kalimajari in implementing their “Sustainable Cocoa” project, aiming for ecological and social sustainability in the local cocoa sector. Her Master’s thesis, “Human Equality and Societal Transformation: Gendered perspectives within a cacao-growing community in Bali, Indonesia,” highlighted how women and men can be differently affected by power structures and development approaches. As a chocolate lover, Evelyn values knowing the personal stories behind products and continues advocating for sustainable, transparent value chains and human rights in the cocoa sector at the Good Chocolate Hub.
Diana is the founder of Detours Zurich, a tourism company that offers social impact walking tours on various topics for locals and travelers alike. She designed the Ethical Chocolate Tour and developed it further with the Good Chocolate Hub. The tour raises awareness of the challenges in the chocolate industry, addresses the history of chocolate and its colonial connections and highlights local, honest chocolate makers who follow the trade model from bean to bar. Diana believes that highlighting local solutions to global problems will inspire consumers to change their consumption behavior and enjoy ethically and sustainably produced chocolate.
“The clever man accumulates knowledge; the wise man sorts it.” (Alberto Moravia, writer)
Ildikó has always been fascinated by knowledge as a resource – whether as an economist, management consultant or teacher. For the Good Chocolate Hub, she develops and imparts knowledge on the topic of sustainability. Chocolate naturally plays a central role in this. It helps her to present the various problems holistically, but also to show creative solutions that harmonize people, planet and profit. A nice way to sort knowledge.
